LIVS Akkermansia + Inulin — Next-Generation Gut Lining Support
Akkermansia muciniphila is not a yoghurt culture. It lives in the mucus layer of your intestinal wall, where it is one of the resident species most closely associated with a healthy gut barrier — and it is largely absent from ordinary probiotic supplements.
LIVS pairs 3 billion AFU of Akkermansia muciniphila with 1,300 mg of organic inulin per serving: the strain, plus the prebiotic fibre that feeds the beneficial bacteria around it. Vegetarian capsules, nothing else added.
Why this strain is different from a standard probiotic
Most probiotics on a supermarket shelf are lactobacillus and bifidobacterium — transient species that pass through and do their work on the way. Akkermansia is a resident. It lives in the mucus layer itself, and it feeds on mucin, the protein that layer is made from.
That sounds counterintuitive until you know the result: consuming mucin signals the epithelial cells beneath to produce more of it. That relationship is why Akkermansia is associated with supporting the integrity of the gut lining, and why it has become one of the most researched species in microbiome science over the past decade.
Modern diets — low in fibre, high in processed food — are associated with lower Akkermansia levels.
Why inulin is in the bottle
Inulin is a prebiotic fibre found in chicory root, Jerusalem artichoke and onions. It is not digested in the small intestine — it arrives in the large intestine intact, where your resident bacteria ferment it.
Sending a beneficial strain into a gut with nothing to feed it is half a job. 1,300 mg of organic inulin per serving is the other half.
Start slowly — this matters
Inulin is a fermentable fibre, and fermentation produces gas. Going straight to a full serving is the most common reason people abandon a prebiotic in week one, blaming the product when the real issue was the ramp.
Start with a lower amount and build up over a week or two. If you have IBS or follow a low-FODMAP diet, inulin is a high-FODMAP fibre — talk to your healthcare provider before starting. Most people who introduce it gradually settle in without trouble.

What "3 billion AFU" means
You will usually see probiotics measured in CFU — colony-forming units. This one is measured in AFU, active fluorescent units, a flow-cytometry method that counts active cells directly rather than by growing colonies on a plate.
AFU is the standard increasingly used for next-generation strains like Akkermansia, which are oxygen-sensitive and difficult to culture by conventional plating — plate counts can undercount them substantially. It is a different measurement, not a weaker one, and it is worth knowing what you are comparing when you look at another label.
